February 21, 2019: Big Lakes County has been granted $107,200 in funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) climate change staff grants initiative to help address staffing gaps and increase our capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change, reduce greenhouse (GHG) emissions, and find efficiencies.

Big Lakes County is among 59 communities across Canada benefitting from this initiative.

Big Lakes County will use the funding to further council’s participation in FCM’s partners in climate protection program by completing tasks like the creation of a GHG emissions inventory, which will help the County make more informed decisions regarding asset management.

The climate change staff grants are offered through the Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program (MCIP) delivered by FCM and funded by the Government of Canada.

Reeve Simard said, “We’re excited to take a progressive step towards preparing for climate change in our County.  We’ll use these resources to identify and pursue projects that not only help the environment but have a financial return as well.  This initiative will support Big Lakes County in achieving our vision of Building a Sustainable Municipality.”
