Insurance Sources for Evacuees

If you have been displaced by the wildfires:

  1. Ask your insurance representative what living expenses you’re entitled to, and for what period of time.
  2. Keep all receipts for your living expenses, while displaced.

More information provided by Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC):

http://www.ibc.ca/ab/resources/media-centre/media-releases/wildfire-situation-in-northern-alberta

Many of our residents are experiencing incurred costs associated with the evacuation order from High Level and surrounding areas. These costs are typically known as Additional Living Expenses in your insurance policy. Most insurance policies will provide coverage for reasonable Additional Living Expenses, for a specified period of time. Each person’s situation is unique, and we encourage you to contact your insurance provider to find out what coverage you have under Prohibited Access by Order for mass Evacuation by a Civil Authority.

Additional Living Expenses covers anything over and above your normal living expenses. When the evacuation order is lifted, the overage of prohibited access ends. If your home is not damaged and the governing authority has given the all clear to return and you choose not to, you will not be eligible for Additional Living Expenses.

Atco update

Last night our ATCO team successfully restored temporary power to Mackenzie County, the Town of High Level, La Crete, Fort Vermillion, Dene Tha’ First Nation and surrounding communities in Northwest Alberta that have been without power due to wildfires.

During these fires our ATCO transmission system suffered severe damage to 68 structures that are part of the two transmission lines providing essential electricity to these communities. Our crews have been working safely and diligently to make temporary repairs to 16 structures which enabled us to successfully restore power to one of the two lines. We have permanently repaired 12 structures and we are now focusing our efforts on completing all remaining permanent repairs.

Due to the volatility of the fire, our safe access to work is often limited,  and additional structures continue to be at risk. Our crews have taken steps to protect against further fire damage to these structures, to the best of our ability.

Communities should expect power to be potentially intermittent over the next few days. We are working hard to restore permanent reliable service to affected communities as quickly & safely as possible
